Hard water contains a number of minerals that can cause mineral scale in water pipelines and pots in the kitchen that are used for cooking and also on other appliances that uses water. Because of this build up of lime-scale it becomes necessary to de-scale kitchen appliances like coffee machines, kettles on a regular basis. Replacing of water pipeline or the boilers too becomes essential.

The presence of dissolved minerals like Magnesium and Calcium in the water makes the water hard. When this water is heated these minerals precipitate and stick to the container in which it is being boiled. The minerals form a layer of white crust on the surface of the vessel, this white crust is called the lime-scale. Lime because calcium in common language is known as lime.

The problem with lime-scale formation is that wherever lime-scale forms it creates a layer of insulation between the heating vessel and the source of heat. The transmission of heat from the heat source to the liquid in the vessel requires more time and energy to reach the desired temperature. As a result more fuel has to be burnt in order to heat the same amount of liquid in the vessel. Not only more energy is wasted but the taste and flavor of cooked food is also affected by the dissolved minerals. Therefore prevention of build-up of lime-scale around heating elements and cooking vessels is desirable.

There are many ways you can prevent lime-scales from forming, some of which are given below:

  • Water softeners – these are Ion Exchange Resin Devices that have organic resin charged with sodium ions. The hard water is made to pass through this softener when the magnesium and calcium are removed from the water. The water softening device has to be charged with salt solution after the sodium ions have exhausted. This recharging is done automatically when the device senses the depletion of sodium ions. The water that is delivered contains high amount of salt and therefore not fit for cooking or drinking. But the water can be used for washing and other such uses.
  • Chemical descalers – these are available in different forms for domestic use and for commercial use separately. Domestic descalers contain lactic acid which can be used in kitchen for descaling pots and cooking vessels. Commercial descalers contain phosphoric acid. Those engaged in agriculture or horticulture use nitric acid as descaler which is used directly in the irrigation system.
  • EM ceramics – these are specially processed pieces of ceramic. The effect of this ceramic is quite powerful on the dissolved metal ions preventing them from forming clusters when the water is boiled. Moreover the ceramic has a descaling effect on the existing scales by dissolving them slowly.
  • Electronic water conditioners – these come in the form of permanent magnets that are wrapped around the cold water pipe. These can also be in the form of a coil wrapped around the water pipe and attached to an electronic device that emits a wide range of frequencies. Both the systems prevent the metal ions from forming any kind of deposits by keeping the metal ions suspended in the water.

The benefits of prevention of lime-scale are that the life of pipeline and appliances is extended. There is reduction in the cost of energy and improvement in the flavor of cooking. Therefore it will be worthwhile if you invest in prevention of lime-scale formation or removal of lime-scale by treating water.
