With more and more people living in apartments, it has become difficult to find space to hang washed clothes for drying. As a result everyone is investing in electric clothes dryer to overcome this problem. Now nearly every home in America has electric clothes dryer. Electric clothes dryer is also referred to as drying machine or tumble dryer. This is not an expensive equipment and is very efficient in removing moisture from clothes and other textile materials.
Basically the electric clothes drier is made up of three primary parts:
- Electric heater
- Exhaust vent
The tumbler rotates and spins at a fast speed, by this action the excess water in the clothes is squeezed out by the action of centripetal force. Then the electrical heater powers up and heats up the air in the tumbler which circulates in the tumbler evaporating the remaining moisture that is still there in the clothes. The evaporated water then escapes through the exhaust vent, leaving the clothes completely dry.
There are many types of electrical clothes dryers offered in the market place. For washing and drying clothes there exists a machine which is popularly known as ‘combos’. This is a combination of a washer and a dryer. A function of the machine is for washing the clothes while the other function dries the clothes. It is actually two separate functions combined into one single unit. Combos have been very popular for quite sometimes. The advantage is that you don’t have to move wet clothes from the washer to a separate dryer, thus saving you a lot of time and trouble. With this appliance you use less of water and less of electric energy. The clothes are washes efficiently and the drying process does not damage the fabric. It saves you a lot of time and you need not spend a lot of time doing your laundry. These machines are very popular with people with limited space in their home or apartment. An up-graded version of this machine is also available which is fitted with a sensor. This sensor is to enable the machine to switch off automatically when it detects that the clothes have dried. This prevents damage to the clothes from overheating.
The electric clothes dryer needs 220 volt power to operate. The heater in the dryer consists of a coil which is heated by electrical power to produce heat to warm the air inside the dryer. These dryers are not rated by US government in their Energy Star program. Energy Star program deals with the rating of consumer goods that run with electrical energy. The more energy efficient an appliance is greater number of stars it is given. However, European Union labels the electric clothes dryer according to its efficiency. This labeling is done on the basis of the amount of electrical energy consumed per kilogram of clothes. The labeling is done from A to G, from which A is supposed to be the most efficient one while label G is the worst one.
Therefore when you are shopping for electric clothes dryer you should consider some factors before you buying one. Some of the factors are:
- Size of the tumbler
- Electric consumption
- Energy rating
- Drying cycle
- Lint catcher
- User manual
Consider the above factors when you buy electric clothes dryer.
